A battery cycler charges and discharges a cell, module, or pack over and over under precisely controlled conditions, recording voltage, current, and capacity at every step. It is the instrument that turns the question of how good a battery really is from a guess into a measured, repeatable answer.
What a cycler actually measures
Across repeated charge and discharge cycles, a cycler tracks the metrics that define a cell's real performance: usable capacity at different discharge rates, «coulombic efficiency», meaning how much of the charge put in comes back out, voltage behaviour under load, and how all of these change as the cell ages. A single measurement tells you very little about a battery. The trend across hundreds or thousands of cycles tells you almost everything that matters for a product's real world lifetime.
Channels, and why independent control matters
A multi channel cycler, such as the Kewell B2000-EC, runs many cells or packs at once, each on its own independently controlled channel. This is what makes statistically meaningful testing practical: running one cell at a time through a multi thousand cycle life test would take an impractical amount of time, while parallel channels let a lab build a real sample size in the same test window.
Constant current, constant voltage, and everything in between
Most cycling profiles combine a «constant current» phase, charging or discharging at a fixed rate, with a «constant voltage» phase near full charge, mirroring how a real charger behaves. More advanced test plans add pulses, rest periods, and temperature variation to reproduce the actual usage pattern a battery will see in the field, rather than a simplified, ideal cycle that does not predict real degradation.
